How do I secure my Router and Network?

Your modem ensures your Internet Service Provider (ISP) can bring Internet into your house. Your router is directly connected to your modem and makes sure that you can access the Internet wirelessly through WiFi. Because your router provides access to all devices in your house that are connected to the Internet, you want to make sure it is safe and secure.

1. Change the default username and password

The default login is often simply admin / admin or admin / password — anyone who knows your router brand can look this up. Change it as soon as possible.

  • Netgear Router
  • Asus Router

2. Change the default WiFi name (SSID) and password

The default network name often reveals your router brand, making it easier for attackers to target you.

  • Netgear Router
  • Asus Router

3. Optional: Check your WiFi security standard

Make sure your router is set to WPA2 or ideally WPA3 — the newest and most secure standard. WPA3 is now available on most modern routers and offers significantly stronger protection than WPA2. You can check and change this in your router's settings.

  • Netgear — Enable WPA3
  • Netgear — Change WiFi security protocol
  • Asus — WPA3 support

4. Optional: Use a VPNs

A VPN encrypts all traffic leaving your home network, adding an extra layer of privacy for every device connected to your router.

5. Optional: Create separate networks for visitors and smart home (IoT) devices

Keeping guests and smart devices (TVs, thermostats, cameras, etc.) on a separate network prevents them from accessing your main devices and files.

  • Netgear — Set up a guest network
  • Asus — Set up a guest network
