What are my rights over my ai data?

What data do AI companies hold about you — and what can you do about it?

Every time you use an AI assistant, data is being collected and stored. The good news: you have real rights over that data. You can view it, download it, and in most cases delete it entirely. This page shows you exactly how for each major platform.

Quick-action links

  • OpenAI Privacy Portal — view, download, or delete all ChatGPT data
  • Google Takeout — Gemini data — download your Gemini conversation history
  • Google Gemini Activity — delete Gemini history
  • Microsoft Privacy Dashboard — view and delete Copilot data
  • Claude Account Settings — delete conversations and account
  • xAI / Grok Privacy — privacy information

Your rights at a glance

Depending on where you live, you likely have the right to:

  • Access — see what data a company holds about you
  • Download — get a copy of your data in a portable format
  • Delete — request removal of your personal data
  • Correct — fix inaccurate information
  • Opt out of training — stop your data being used to train AI models

US residents in states with privacy laws (California, Colorado, Virginia, and others) have these rights under state law. EU and UK residents have stronger protections under GDPR. Even without a specific law covering you, most major AI companies offer these controls voluntarily — at least for now.

ChatGPT (OpenAI)

Download your data: Settings > Data Controls > Export Data > Confirm export. OpenAI will email you a download link containing your full chat history and account data. OpenAI Help Center The link expires after 24 hours, so download it right away.

Make a formal privacy request: Visit privacy.openai.com and click "Make a Privacy Request." Options include: Download my data, Do not train on my content, Delete my ChatGPT account, Delete my GPTs, or Remove personal data from ChatGPT responses. You'll need to verify your identity.

Delete your account: Settings > Data Controls > Delete Account, or use the Privacy Portal above. You'll need to confirm by entering your email and typing "DELETE."

A court order issued in early 2025 as part of a copyright lawsuit means deleted chats are no longer permanently removed after 30 days — they are now retained indefinitely in a secured system, affecting most free, Plus, Pro, and Team users.  OpenAI has stated it intends to appeal this ruling.

Google Gemini

Download your data: Go to takeout.google.com, select "Gemini" from the list, and request an export. This includes your Gemini chats, generated media, and uploads. Note that downloading your data does not delete it from Google's servers. Google Support

Delete your Gemini history: Go to myactivity.google.com/product/gemini > Delete > All time.

No standalone Gemini account to delete: Gemini is deeply integrated into your Google Account — there is no simple delete button and no standalone "Gemini account" to close. To stop data collection, turn off "Keep Activity" as described on our AI Privacy Settings page. To delete your Google Account entirely, visit myaccount.google.com — but be aware this removes access to all Google services.

Microsoft Copilot

Download your data: Visit account.microsoft.com/privacy > Download your data. This covers Copilot conversations along with other Microsoft services.

Delete your conversation history: Profile icon > Account > Privacy > Clear my history. Individual conversations can also be deleted from the sidebar.

Delete your Microsoft account: Visit account.microsoft.com/profile and follow the account closure process. Note this affects all Microsoft services — Outlook, OneDrive, Xbox, and more.

Claude (Anthropic)

Delete conversations: In the sidebar, hover over a chat and click the options menu to delete it. To delete all conversations, go to Settings and look for the option to clear history.

Delete your account: claude.ai/settings > scroll to the bottom > Delete Account. This permanently removes your account and associated data.

Make a privacy request: Email privacy@anthropic.com to request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data.

Grok (xAI)

Delete conversation history: In the Grok app or at grok.com, find your conversation history in the sidebar and delete chats individually.

Make a privacy request: Visit x.ai/legal/privacy-policy for contact information to submit data access or deletion requests to xAI directly. If you use Grok through X, data requests related to your X account should go to X's privacy team.

Important things to know

Deleting your data does not undo training that has already happened. If your conversations were used to train an AI model before you opted out or deleted your account, that training cannot be reversed — the model can't "unlearn" your data. What deletion does is remove your data from the company's storage going forward and stop it from being used in future training runs.

AI companies also typically retain some data even after deletion — for legal compliance, abuse prevention, or ongoing litigation. Always check the current privacy policy of any platform before assuming your deletion request has fully removed all traces of your data.
